“Judas betrayed Jesus, but Jesus sacrificed them both”
I love that sentence so much, ‘cause that was one of the themes/ideas I played around with when I wrote The Lost Gospel of Judas (LG) . Except, of course, in my version of Judas’ story (1) Judas is aware of the prophecy of his betrayal, (2) he agonizes over his “role” in both of their (his and Jesus’) (entwined) destinies, and (3) his freedom to choose the role of Betrayer is more emphasized.
The entire premise of LG is based on the “exploration of the place of free will in divine prophecies, focusing primarily on the tormented reluctance of Judas regarding his destiny, because the Savior he is meant to betray is the man he loves” as well as my envisioning of “another possible history, a world where queerness is a simple fact of life rather than a thing to be concealed. Where Jesus and Mary Magdalene can tease each other about the people they love, where holy scriptures don’t balk at the thought of genderfluidity, and where the great salvation of humankind grew from the love of two men.”
